Earth – Circa 1027 I.R. (For ‘Il Rinascimento’ or ‘The Renaissance’) – currently referred to as ‘The Age on the Precipice of Space’
Excerpt from the the ‘Sol System General’ boards on M.C.O.,in a thread entitled ‘what the hell is an ‘earth’ anyway?’
StarStuck42: so we got all these planets rite? but whatsup with teh names? i mean i was in science class yesterday and prof. covington was all ‘mercury, venus, earth, mars’ ectectect… and like, i wanna know where it came from. sorry if was posted before but i dunno how to use the search function…
R3D3Y399: Hullo, newbie! ^_^ Totally first in before the lock,FT-MAJOR-W, so take that Kite and Cactus! 31 to 28 to26, yo. And only 3 hours left before the contest end! Teehee! =B Anyhow, Star, they’re just names…? If you had a pet, for example, you would just name it whatever you wanted to name it, right? Errrrrr…. Actually, I think I remember reading something about it the other day. Lemme see if I can find it and I’ll repost.
HigherThanUrKite: Too slow, Red. You might be first in before the lock, but your search skills suck it. Check this out:

“So’s I was doin’ my astronomy project for Roper’s class and finally met the crazy librarian. What the fuck, man? I just needed a constellation map, but the blue-haired girl with the funky glasses got all into it about the whole damn system, when all I wanted was a damn search key term. Anyhow, in case anyone was wondering, the names of the planets in our system are all named after some whack ass mythology shit from like, thousands of years ago. Total ‘did u know?’ moment. I think she said they were named after Gods.
Edit 7/14/1022 at 10:14:03: Great. She tracked me down this morning to let me know that she ‘forgot’ to say that it isn’t just planets that got their names like that. Most celestial bodies are in the same boat… either that, or they just got named with numbers.”

See? Oh, yeah, but don’t go lookin’ for the librarian, Star, if you’re in Asherah. Ol’ fishboy was a transfer student over in Telemnos when he posted that.

Earth
The third planet of the Sol system and, as far as anyone currently living knows, the only planet within the system naturally capable of supporting life. According to historical records, humanity had, at one time, spread throughout the whole of the system, populating some planets directly (Mars and Venus are the confirmed examples), some of the planetary satellites (such as Earth’s moon ‘Luna’, and Jupiter’s ‘Europa’), and more commonly, via large, planet-orbiting space stations. Although definitive details are sketchy at best, this system-wide civilization met its end due to ‘a great cataclysm’ over 1000 years ago. This ‘cataclysm’ is thought to be responsible for the monster-spawning ‘wasteland’ areas found on current-day Earth, but this is largely speculative ‘science’ with no concrete basis. Though it is believed that more knowledge of the past could be found on-planet (through exploration of ruins, ect.), the lure of space and the common belief that more ‘intact’ relics will be found outside the atmosphere have left Earthly endeavors largely wanting in terms of funding.
In any case, the Earth of today is currently in a period called ‘the Renaissance’, depicted as such because of the quality of life and level of technology enjoyed by the populations of the eight major tower cities (see below) and the global push towards space exploration. Although unconfirmed (it is difficult to compare current technology to that recovered from ruins), the global sentiment is that, despite a significantly smaller estimated population than the ‘historical Earth’, the world is now at a level of civilization equivalent to or better than the environment that sent ‘man into space’ the first time. The ‘push to space’, which began approximately 50 years ago, has allowed for a cooperative, though competitive, focus, with all eight cities sharing knowledge (to an extent) and racing one another to be the first to ‘break out of the atmosphere.’ For the general population, this has meant an influx of information and an overflow of media reports focusing only on that goal and, as a very-well received side effect, an end to inter-city military aggressions. Peace reigns, generally, as there has not been so much as a military skirmish between the tower cities in the last 45 years. However, as peaceful and optimistic a planet as it is, something dark is moving beneath the surface… or perhaps, beyond the sky. The monsters spawned by the ‘wastelands’ are becoming stronger, appearing in greater numbers, and attacking with more ferocity than ever before. This, of course, is not known to the majority of the citizens of the tower cities, but the ‘unprotected’ – those who live in small settlements that dot the landscape – will tell a story of hardship coming. But their warnings, so far, have fallen on ears deafened by the glorious roar of rocketships.
